Scotland: Why Go For Half When You Can Go All The Way

When Scotland’s First Minister Alex Slamond took office in 2007, he was handed a renewable energy standard with a target of 50% electricity coming from renewables by 2020. By his fourth year as First Minister, Scotland had already reached 35% in 2011 of electricity coming from renewable sources. Because of the success and his realization of Scotland’s renewable energy potential, he envisioned the possibility of reaching 100% renewables by 2020. When Salmon made this decision he stated that:

The Scottish government understands that renewable energy is essential for energy security  for environmental sustainability, and for economic prosperity. For that reason, I can guarantee that we will continue to provide leadership and support for everything that you are doing here in Scotland.”
