2012 ASES Awards

We received many outstanding nominations for  the 2012 Annual ASES Awards.  We pleased to see so many talented and passionate educators, innovators and advocates who are having a big impact in the renewable energy field. We’re pleased to announce the following 2012 honorees:

2012 CHARLES GREELEY ABBOT AWARD
William Spratley, for his dedication to education resulting in widespread knowledge of renewable energy and energy efficiency to both businesses and individuals.

2012 HOYT CLARKE HOTTEL AWARD
Frank Kreith, for his innovative thinking that spurred many technology advancements. He has publicly promoted solar energy for decades while inspiring generations of young engineers.

2012 WOMEN IN SOLAR ENERGY AWARD
Trudy Forsyth, for her promotion and education of women in the renewable energy industry. She is a renowned expert in wind energy, and attributed to reinvigorating interest in its distributed applications.

Heather Andrews (posthumous), who was an unrelenting force of support and advocacy for solar energy. While her presence is dearly missed, the consequences of her work will never go unnoticed.

2012 PASSIVE SOLAR PIONEER AWARD
Edna Shaviv,  who for over the last 40 years has created software, integrated ideas on community design, and initiated research in the United States and in Israel changing the way buildings perform.

Mark Chalom, for a 35-year commitment to creating a living legacy of sun dwellings, passive solar and sustainable buildings. He has influenced generations as a teacher, researcher, architect, public speaker, builder and activist.

2012 JOHN AND BARBARA YELLOT AWARD
Sara Motamedi, for her outstanding graduate work integrating energy and daylighting simulations at the first stage of architectural design.

ASES AWARD CATEGORIES

About the Charles Greeley Abbot Award: This award is named in honor of Dr. Abbot, who was a prominent researcher in solar energy. During his lifetime of 101 years, he developed a number of instruments for measuring insolation, determined the solar constant with great accuracy, and contributed greatly to the understanding of the solar resource on earth.

Women in Solar Energy Award: This award is for woman in solar, encouraging more women to become technically involved in the field. Award winners have technical accomplishments and/or are an outstanding educator, advocate, promoter, change agent, developer, facilitator related to solar. A woman who has contributed significantly to the acceptance and advancement of women in solar by meeting one or more of the following criteria: Advocacy/ political, Educational, Technical, Contractor, Social change/developing nations.

Passive Pioneer Award: The American Solar Energy Society has established this award for passive solar pioneers. It honors those in the passive field whose pioneering work set the stage for others to follow. Honorees are men and women who developed the theories, early research efforts, new concepts, and opportunities for later researchers to develop. Their foresight, innovative thinking, and creativity opened the doors for others.

John and Barbara Yellott Award: The American Solar Energy Society is pleased to announce the John and Barbara Yellott Award, given to a graduate student concentrating on solar energy in a recognized institution of higher learning. John I. Yellott was instrumental in guiding the activities of the predecessor organization of ASES, the Association for Applied Solar Energy, in its early years during the 1950s. He was a recognized researcher in the solar energy field, a user of solar energy in his own home, and an entrepreneur participating in the growth of the solar industry. He and his wife, Barbara Yellott, were long interested in students and made gifts to ASES for the purpose of recognizing and supporting a student working in the solar energy field.

Fellows of the Society
Any member of ASES who has been a member for at least 10 consecutive years and has served with distinction in the advancement of solar energy utilization by way of research, education, public service, and/or service to ASES, is eligible for nomination to the grade of Fellow of ASES. An eligible member may be nominated by three members (at least one of which shall be a Fellow) of ASES in good standing. Each nomination will be screened by the Fellow Member Screening Committee, which shall recommend potential Fellows to the Board for final approval.

Rebecca Vories Award Nomination
In 1993, the American Solar Energy Society established this award to recognize special contributions to the Society. The name of the award was changed in 1996 to honor the memory of Rebecca Vories, one of the Society’s most tireless and valuable volunteers. Criteria: The award honors those whose volunteer efforts on behalf of the society have significantly advanced ASES’s ability to meet its mission. The recipient must be a member of ASES.
