Annual Division Meeting

The Solar Electric Division conducted its Annual Meeting at the Solar Conference in Denver. Discussions from the prior weekend’s Divisions Caucus were reviewed, new Division Bylaws were reviewed and approved, and a Nominating Committee was formed for the upcoming Division Officer elections. Division education and outreach activities were discussed, as were plans for the upcoming year. Great interest was expressed in the development of a SED member compilation of expertise/products/services (below). Also, creation of a video tour of the new 64 MW solar plant was suggested, especially with a focus on job creation – the theme of Solar 2007.

Solar Electric Technology Fact Sheets

One SED activity that is just underway is the development of Fact Sheets for the various solar electric technologies: PV, solar thermal electric, wind power, and ocean thermal energy conversion. An example is shown here.  Click here for CSP Fact Sheet >> Volunteers that are interested in participating in this Division activity are welcomed.

ASES Solar Resource Guide

A new free service will soon be offered to all ASES Professional Members, the ASES Solar Resource Guide. This guide will be a web-accessible compilation of ASES Professional Members, showing their areas of expertise as well as any services or products offered.

During the Denver meeting of the Solar Electric Division (SED), there was strong support for creating a mechanism to better enable reaching out to fellow Division members for expertise in various areas of solar, and to also provide a marketing tool to the outside world.

  • Who does what?
  • Who offers a certain expertise?
  • Who can provide specific insight into special issues, research topics, certain products/materials?

So shortly after the Denver Conference, the SED began working on a “SunList”  -- a SED member compilation of expertise/products/services. Several SED Professional Members participated in the defining the SunList categories, format, and entries.

Recently, after discussions with Becky Campbell-Howe at ASES HQ, this SED effort was merged with plans for a Society-wide Resource Guide. This will strengthen and broaden the SED SunList effort, and make this resource even more valuable. Again, this free service will only be available to Professional Members. If you are a Basic Member, consider upgrading to Professional status.

The ASES Solar Resource Guide will be available on-line early in 2007 – aiming for January. All Professional Members will be contacted so they can be included in the Resource Guide. Multiple entries will be allowed. Professional Members of the SED will be key benefactors of the Solar Resource Guide, so the SED will continue to work with ASES HQ as this valuable resource is shaped and implemented. Contact randycgee@comcast.net if you want to help shape the Solar Resource Guide.
