This is the thinking behind the Kickstarter campaign. The process should be transparent, and this will give you a better background/idea of what it is.
ASES American Solar Energy Society – Modernize / Share Information to Support Mission
AKA – Digitize and Democratize the Solar Movement (Database, SEO/Beautiful)
Keya Lea Horiuchi
Sept. 16, 2013
This project supports the ASES mission by sharing its massive amounts of information to truly support all facets of solar, including the solar industry and those wanting to move toward solar, that is inclusive to municipalities, businesses, organizations and individuals. It enables solar and renewable information to have the widest reach possible.
This project seeks to get all of ASES’ information online and easily searchable within a free flowing text format so that it is responsive and can show in the variety of screen sizes that are accessing the site. It simultaneously makes all the information available to advertising revenue to the thousands of pages that will be generated.
A crowd-sourced project funding campaign that is open from October 3 – November 3, 2013 (32 days) will fund the project.
Digitize & Democratize – Open the Solar Energy Goodness to Everyone. This project will digitize over 59 years of solar information, making it all open and accessible. The project goal will be completed within one year.
By making this information readily and easily available, ASES can truly lead the world toward solar.
Assessment of the current situation
Not good. But let’s make it better. This project has been built on an assessment of ASES’ current situation, the current interconnected information data driven world, and steers ASES in a modern one where ASES can reestablish its leadership position.
Advancing Solar Future
Leading the Renewable Energy Society
Established in 1954, ASES is the nation’s leading association of solar professions and advocates. Our mission is to inspire an era of energy innovations and speed the transition to a sustainable energy economy.
Leads national efforts to increase the use of solar energy, energy efficiency and other sustainable technologies.
The questions that sculpted this project were built on the following:
What does ASES’ organizational goal mean in the modern era and how can its mission best be accomplished?
What does ASES have to offer?
What drives the internet?
The internet has changed many industries: music, print, and video. Information is accessible from a device in our pockets within our phones and data is immediate.
In general, information is expected to be freely accessible. Consumers search for and expect google to send them high quality information. ASES information can’t be found because it’s not even online.
This project proposal seeks to get ASES archives, all Solar Today, all white papers, all photographs, all online. The focus is on the content, within free flowing web pages that can be controlled. (Not within pdfs) It will be done in one year.
It also seeks to establish and confirm that ASES is the nation’s center for Solar Information. Create community and use the pull that you could have to advocate and get information out in the modern age. What ASES has is information. It’s incredibly valuable in the information driven economy of the internet. It’s also part of how ASES can leverage to better support the localities.
Transform ASES’ thinking from getting money from people and organization to survive from month to month – to giving back to the community. One great asset that ASES has is the information it’s sitting on. It’s already been written. It’s just sitting there. Get it out to the world.
Data is king on the internet. Data is what you have and it’s being held back. The world does not react well to this.
How the internet works:
- People search for data.
- Google (or the other search engine) serves up data in an order list after utilizing a complex algorithm.
- ASES already has a track record, ASES has the name, the history and the data to make a positive impact on the world in pushing it toward solar and renewables, as well as will benefit massively by getting huge amounts of internet traffic.
This proposal is built on KickStarter, although Indigogo or another fundraising organization can be used. I chose KickStarter because it is one of the most popular, well known platforms that funds projects. There have been many successful digital publishing projects funded by KickStarter. Their stakes are higher because if the fundraising goal is not met, none of the funds will be charged to those donating.
Must move quickly! October is the best month. Some things to do:
Solar Decathlon, October 3 – 6, 10 – 13, Orange County, CA
Solar Home Tour! Let people download flyers to pass out to help support the fund drive.
Lodging and Green Sustainability, First of October, Dallas, TX
SXSW Eco, Oct 7 – 9, Austin, TX
Solar World Chicago, Oct 21 – 24, Chicago Big Solar industry meets
Social / Sustainable, Oct 22, NYC
NetZero Cities, October 23 – 24, Fort Collins, CO
Net Impact, Oct 25 expo, Silicon Valley CA
The estimates are 6656.00 only for travel costs. Please contribute 5000 to help defray travel costs. This will get me to the Solar Decathlon, SXSW Eco, (back to the Solar Decathlon) Solar World Chicago, Fort Collins, and the Big Corporate Net Impact Conference. They will drive the campaign and get more information about ASES. I will design and print out the postcards. 2500 minimum – 5000.
There will be a short window of time. Most fundraisers last one month. That’s what we’d be going for.
There’s nothing to loose. If concerned about money, it will put you out 5000. I’ll push the fundraising. We need to leverage all relationships.
It’s fast. It will work, or it won’t. I think it will.
My projects are successful. I previously did two films. The second film, I took on a screening tour, and drove to the majority of over 60 screenings across the country. Now I’m in web design, development and technologies. I know SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and will do it appropriately to build and capture as much solar traffic as possible in the new site. It’s the best thing that can be done to help solar. Don’t keep solar behind locked doors. The world has moved beyond that.
It’s also a big marketing push and will generate a lot of publicity for ASES and solar.
This project makes solar accessible to the widest reach as possible. This openness is more rewarding economically, socially and politically than having a closed system. Evaluate the current system. Are you making money off of it? Is it helping to build solar?
Imagine this: ASES Supports
A project to democratize, digitize, make available all of our solar information …
The website will be setup to dominate the internet. It will be responsive to the 200+ screen sizes that are out there. Fully utilize SEO, within text, all images are labeled. Meta data and clean code are important. I know about both of these.
It will be a constructive process, as much as possible, opposed to destructive, meaning that it can be built upon WordPress (within a clean install). Things will happen quickly, but in incremental steps.
The new site will be modeled after the print icons that are doing well: the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times. Space is precious. It should be used wisely. You have data that will greatly benefit the world. The magazine or ASES can still solicit ad revenue. Imagine: think about how many pages (data) you currently have (not even taking into account the overall design) and how many could could have. It’s that many more pages that have ads within the tons of data that you have.
I believe that ASES will have the unexpected surprise that companies, organizations, even cities or others who one would never have thought will want to advertise with the solar energy society, like ski resorts, organic food products, happy animal products, can and will express both interest and support. Information is valuable. Open it up to everyone. I believe that many, many people will support the advance of solar. If your data is online, then the opportunities are open to them. Open up the data – get it on the internet and the rest of the web traffic will also come. Monetary support will follow, but currently it doesn’t look like you’re doing much.
User data is important. A section will let people upload their photos of their pictures to share. Not just for the Solar Tour, but to contribute to the overall content. Harness the excitement about solar. Great things are happening. Telluride just installed solar to run all their municipalities. Let people and communities them strut their solar stuff. As the American Solar Energy Society, push and support the discussion of solar. In this way, ASES will widen its circle of influence. Open your process. It will be easily filled as is evidenced by the rush to solar (that ASES has been missing out on).
Enhanced user engagement. The solar house tour is an excellent thing. Let me push this project at the Solar Decathlon. Allow people to upload their photos from their iphones, or smart-phones. You’ll Get lovely pictures. Also push these through social media.
Cultivate an open, friendly, organized image. The current closed, confusing web environment is killing the organization.
The ad at the top of the main landing page should be moved. No one does that anymore because it is destructive to the overall image. It should load under the main banner, under the menu. It can load at the top for secondary sections, but the top of the main site should be ASES. Let’s work together for the new Solar Today because having the information online will bring massive amounts of traffic. We can redesign it now. (We kinda have to.)
(This is just the layout. The navigation is also unexpected and switches out from the mainsite, between the different navigation menu making it really confusing and frustrating.)
Mine the internet with the massive amount of data that you’re sitting on. You have great data. Get it out to the world so they can see, use, and improve upon it to truly move toward solar and renewables. Harness users to tell their stories. Get your data online. ASES will get massive amounts of traffic. Industry will also benefit from the opportunity to advertise to this larger audience resulting from the openness and availability of information.
Timeline – Kickstarter Campaign – Digitize, Democratize – Open the Solar Energy Goodness to Everyone. Project to digitize 60 years of solar information, make it available within one year. For some reason we haven’t made the switch to digital.
Yes, it’s soon, but it also is will also benefit strategically.
Solar Decathlon is taking place. The students are interested in solar. They will push the campaign on social media.

Interesting project – Let’s build a goddamn Tesla museum
Interesting – but seems to be something to look to later. – Stage 2
Teams can raise money. Harness too – complimentary? Need to motivate community to take action.
“Increase awareness for solar happiness.”
Help us do our mission. Empower, educate about solar and renewables.
The world has changed. Help us to get our message out to Americans (the world?) We want to make available our information. We’ve been a leader in solar education, and we want to make this accessible to everyone, to truly push the world in a good direction.
*** END – This is the thinking behind the current Kickstarter campaign. I’m putting it online because I believe the process should be transparent. Please help by pledging and spreading the word!
