Brien Clemens (Home Owner)
As the owner of a renewable energy Company, Applied Solar LLC, I wanted to be able to demonstrate the capabilities of solar for residential use. This home is energy neutral and provides economic as well as environmental benefits. The greatest promise of solar technology is to enable homeowners and commercial users to produce electricity for their own needs, including transportation via electric vehicles, while reducing the demand for fossil fuel-produced power and the economic uncertainty of increasing costs of electricity.

When we decided to move from San Francisco Bay Area to DFW this summer, one of our concerns was receiving huge energy bills. We heard that the average monthly electricity bill of a typical 1500 sq.ft single family home is about $200 in DFW. We were thrilled when we found this solar home is available for rent. Although we have lived here only 6 weeks, our first electricity bill of August 2012 was + $25 credit, which means that we earned $25 rather than paying bills as we generated more energy than we consumed. This miracle was possible because of large solar panels on the south-facing roof, an efficient HVAC system, and our energy-conserving life style. As professors who teach and research urban sustainability and the benefits of on-site renewable energy generation in cities, we are so glad that this home serves as an excellent educational site for our students at UT Arlington and for the public.
