Owen Valley Winery Reaping the Benefits of Solar Energy
Solar Celebration Day Set for October 5th
Spencer, IN, September 18, 2013: The Owen Valley Winery, located at 491 Timber Ridge Rd. Spencer, IN 47460, will soon be celebrating the winery’s reaping of the many benefits of clean energy from the sun thanks in part to a grant awarded to them from the Renewable Energy for America Program (R.E.A.P.), a program managed by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Office. The winery applied for the grant in the spring through their local USDA Rural Development office in Bloomfield, and was awarded a grant this summer. The grant will help the winery recoup installation costs for a solar photovoltaic (PV) system designed and installed for the winery in September by Mann Plumbing MPI Solar of Bloomington, IN.
The system: The 8.5 KW PV system will offset over 65% of the winery’s annual electric load, saving the winery thousands of dollars over its projected 30 year service life, and will provide significant, long lasting environmental benefits for the winery and community as well. Each KwH of electricity produced by the system offsets about 1.74 lbs of climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The system is projected to produce at least 12000 KwH per year for an annual offset of over 20,000 lbs of GHG and a lifetime offset potential of over 600,000 Lbs of GHG over 30 years. The system will be monitored for 24/7 real-time and historic energy production accessible over the internet providing valuable educational and environmental information for the winery and the community.
The celebration: Owen Valley Winery invites the public to join the celebration as they become the first winery in the Midwest to run on sunshine. The event is set for Saturday October 5th from 1-? and will feature a brief ribbon cutting ceremony as the system will “go live,” with comments from local officials, Owen Valley Winery personnel and Indiana USDA, followed by an afternoon of festivities featuring food, live music and of course, wine. Educational information will be available on the winery’s solar energy system and solar and renewable energy options for homes and businesses in Indiana, and ongoing USDA REAP grant program opportunities.
