10:00am - Green Energy

11:00am - Dimming the Sun - NOVA Documentary
"Dimming the Sun" investigates the discovery that the sunlight reaching Earth has been growing dimmer, which may seem surprising given all the international concern over global warming. At first glance, less sunlight might hardly seem to matter when our planet is stewing in greenhouse gases. But the discovery of global dimming has led several scientists to revise their models of the climate and how fast it's changing. According to one recent and highly controversial model, the worst-case warming scenario could be worse than anyone has predicted. "Dimming the Sun" unravels this baffling climate conundrum and the implications for Earth's future.
12:00pm - Kilowatt Ours
Produced on a $20,000 budget, this 65-minute documentary reveals the underreported side effects resulting from America’s voracious appetite for coal-generated electricity. “Kilowatt Ours” follows filmmaker Jeff Barrie on his 18-month journey across the southeast United States, where more than six tons of coal are burned to generate electricity for the average home annually. Barrie takes viewers from our light switches at home to the sources of our energy, examining social and environmental consequences such as global warming, mountain top removal, air pollution, childhood asthma and mercury contamination.
1:00pm - Designing a Great Neighborhood
In DESIGNING A GREAT NEIGHBORHOOD, director David Wann follows the progress of the Wild Sage Cohousing Community project, where future residents participate in the design of their own neighborhood. The stated architectural goal at the Wild Sage site in Boulder is a "zero emissions" neighborhood in which solar energy, energy efficiency, and changes in behavior eliminate the need for fossil fuels.
2:00pm - Solar Decathlon
18 Teams from the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and Spain competed in the Solar Decathlon, an international competition to build and operate the best solar-powered home. This movie follows the Cal Poly team (3rd place winners) as they design, build and truck their house 3,000 miles to the nation's capitol.
3:00pm - State of Resolve
California has been at the forefront of national and global environmental policy for years, through Democratic and Republican administrations and during boom and bust economies. Whether it's because they are outdoorsy people, born-activists, or the first U.S. victims of a smog problem, the fact remains that Californians are innovators and have consistently led the country in environmental matters.
4:00pm - Saved by the Sun
As the Earth heats up at a dangerous rate and fossil fuels become scarcer, ordinary citizens and businesses are bypassing the federal government to lead the way in exploring a clean, renewable source of power: the sun. In this report, NOVA shines a light on how and why people across America and the world are "going solar," using radiant energy of the sun to power homes, businesses, and even entire communities. But can everyday people really make a difference by using solar power? And can solar technologies, with their high cost and logistical challenges, truly play a bigger role in powering the future of humanity? The grand hopes, latest innovations, roiling controversies, and practical realities of solar power all come to the fore in this program. |
