Students in the South Bronx are advancing research in the synergy between green roofs and PV arrays.

Becoming educated about solar and other forms of renewable energy is becoming more mainstream these days even reaching students in the South Bronx. Nathaniel Wight, a public high school teacher at the Bronx Design & Construction Academy (BDCA) located in the South Bronx, NY aims to heighten his students awareness of alternative energy. Mr. Wight and his students have been collaborating with Marc Perez, Christina Ho and Wade R. McGillis at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University to research the benefits of green roofs and solar photovoltaic canopies.

Located in an urban environment where space is at a premium, the team aims to find ways to optimize underutilized space and rooftops are no exception. Given their urban environment and the lack of studies focused on the synergy between green roofs and PV arrays this seemed the perfect project for the team. This study aims to evaluate data collected from four model houses, one housing a control roof, another with a green roof, a standard fixed photovoltaic system, and a GRIPV-c system. The study is ongoing and is looking at temperature, relative humidity, and solar insolation data to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the positive impact of a combined green roof and photovoltaic canopy system on the health of the green roof vegetation, the PV canopy system efficiencies, and the efficiency of roof mounted HVAC air handling units.

The purpose of the study is to show the mutual benefit green roofs and solar panels can provide. Initial findings indicate that the lowered temperature (from the green roof) increase PV performance. The team is currently running a model to determine what the actual gain in efficiency is. This research is taking place on the school’s Green Roof at Smith, GRAS.

The team was accepted to speak at WREF 2012 and the presentation will be led by two ninth grade students, some of the youngest ever to present at this conference. In fact, this will be the very first flight for one of these young presenters.

We look forward to seeing them present their talk, Green-Roof Integrated PV Canopies – An Empirical Study and Teaching Tool for Low Income Students in the South Bronx on Wednesday May 16th at 1:15pm in Mile High Ballroom 1C.

We suspect this is just the beginning of these what these young minds will accomplish. We can’t wait to see what else they contribute to this field in the future.

If you’re reading this then you might be interested in the American Solar Energy Society’s (ASES) Technical Divisions. People join ASES for many reasons, but Professional members often join to achieve professional advantage through education, sales, training and networking. The hub for these activities is attendance at the annual ASES conference World Renewable Energy Forum 2012, participating in the review of conference technical papers, and membership in the technical divisions. ASES’ divisions serve as the focal point for Professional members to interact with professionals with similar interests. If your livelihood depends on renewable energy, then ASES Professional and division membership is for you. As a Professional member you can participate in up to nine divisions depending upon you areas of interest.

What is an ASES Division?

Technical divisions exist to support the interests of the Professional members. ASES’ technical divisions include Solar Electric, Solar Buildings, Sustainability, Solar Thermal, Resource Applications, Clean Water and Energy, Sustainable Transportation, Concentrating Solar Power and Small Wind.

Small wind turbines can help power any size building.

Division activities include:

Publishing division newsletters

Contributing to ASES publications including SOLAR TODAY, Solar@Work (e-newsletter for professionals), policy papers and other educational materials

Providing technical expertise to ensure papers presented at the annual conference are of the highest quality

Providing webinars and conference calls on topics of interest to the divisions, chapters and the general membership.

In addition, many states have decided to move ahead of the federal government in the development of renewable energy policy. ASES’ Chapter leadership can call on the divisions for technical information to help draft a policy position on a state issue.

While membership in technical divisions is open to all Professional members, the divisions are designed for those with a stake in the outcome of the field. If you’ve read this far you may be a good candidate to become a Professional member of ASES and join a technical division.

Re-purposing old relics on the urban landscape using green technology. Click to learn more.

Finding new uses for old, unused space in urban places has been a dilemma many cities face. New York City is one that is successful at re-purposing relics from the past into modern, usable space. While I was in NYC for an extended stay I walked the HighLine, old train tracks that have been re-purposed into a gorgeous space for walking with gardens and spectacular views.

This week I discovered the LowLine, a project that aims to re-purpose an old trolley station into a beautiful, usable underground park. When Dan Barasch and James Ramsey discovered this abandoned station on Delancey Street on the Lower East Side in NYC they immediately saw a vision that would match design and solar technology.

The approach of this project uses the latest in fiber optics to reflect light underground. The use of this green technology will reduce carbon emissions and electricity while providing a refuge for plants, trees and people from the busy urban landscape. A demo of the project just received full funding through KickStarter. We look forward to including this innovative space in a future ASES National Solar Tour. Until then if you want to support the Solar Tour this fall you can learn more here.
