Tour Description:
This $4
million, 29,300 square foot building serves as a
model for energy and resource efficient
construction. The windows are low-e, argon filled,
with vinyl clad wood casings and daylight fills
almost all interior spaces. A significant amount of
the total energy savings come from this feature. In
addition to the passive solar aspect, all lighting
fixtures are high-efficiency and are equipped with
room occupancy sensors. Efficient, right-sized fans

constructed with insulated concrete forms (ICF) and geothermal heating and cooling. The result is

Solar Heated and Hot-water Home

Tour Description: Thirty evacuated solar tubes collect heat on the roof that is
transferred to a 100 gallon storage tank in the basement. The water tank is then heated and
used for domestic hot water such as showers and washing dishes. The hot water also runs
through tubes buried in the floor in the lower level of the house to warm the house during the
winter.

Terra-Dome Earth Sheltered Home

Tour Description: The Terra-Dome Earth Sheltered home
was built in 1980. This type of house is built using forms and poured concrete
to create domed modules. The modules are then combined to create the layout of
the home. This home has 4.5 modules. On top of the house, there is anywhere
between 2 to 5 feet of earth. This helps to insulate the house from extreme
temperatures and keeps it at constant temperature all year round. Come see this
beautiful, unique home. There really isn't any other like it!

array was installed on the top of the Kouba building
during the summer of 2005 through a series of
hands-on workshops. The solar array has three types
of racks – single axis, dual axis, and fixed. A
kiosk keeps track of real time electric data from

typical house.
