UNI Center for Energy & Environmental Education
Tour Description:
This $4 million, 29,300 square foot building is a model of energy
efficient construction. The windows are low-e,
argon-filled; daylighting is used on both floors; floor
and stone pillars provide additional heat-absorption
inside. The building also has PV panels that produce 900
watts. A solar boat and solar lawn mower will also be
displayed.

The Center is located on the corner of Jennings Dr. and Campus St.
just south of the UNI Performing Art Center & University
Avenue. Tour time is 1-4 p.m.

Solar Hot Water/Floor Heat & Photovoltaics
Tour Description:
This site has two active solar systems. Thirty evacuated solar tubes
collect heat that is transferred to a 108-gallon storage
tank and used for showers, dish washing, as well as
radiant floor heating on the lower level. The home also
has a 30 panel/6000 watt photovoltaic array for
electrical needs. It is also a passive solar home.

Geothermal Home Retrofit
Tour Description:
This home has a retrofit geothermal system installed for
heating, cooling and hot water. The system is a vertical
installation using 8 wells drilled 75 feet deep.

922 W. 9th St., Cedar Falls, near 9th & College Sts. The tour is 1-4 p.m.

Waverly House of Green
Tour Description: This is Waverly Light & Power's
House of Green, recently purchased by private owners. It
is a 3-bedroom 1,500 square foot house that includes the
latest in renewable and energy efficient technologies.
Some of these are passive solar, energy efficient
appliances, recycled steel shingles, fiber cement
siding, corn-fiber carpet, and bamboo flooring.

How to Take This Tour:
400 Tumbleweed Trail in the NE Waverly Prairie Parks addition. Take
1st Ave. NW onto Adams Pkwy. north across the Cedar
River. Turn right at the first street (Cedar Lane), left
at the first street (Evans St.), veer left at the top of
the hill onto Tumbleweed Trail. Tour time is 11 a.m. -
2 p.m.

Terra-Dome Earth-Sheltered Home
Tour Description:
The Terra-Dome earth-sheltered home was built in 1980.
This type of house is built using forms and poured
concrete to create domed modules. The modules are then
combined to create the layout for the home. This home
has 4.5 modules. The home is insulated under 2-5 feet of
earth that helps keep the interior of the home at an
even temperature year-round.

Super Energy-Efficient Duplex
Tour
Description:
This energy efficient duplex was recently completed
using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) construction
with a geothermal installation
of horizontal tubes. The super-tight home is insulated
with 2" of rigid foam under the basement floors and 4"
of spray foam in the attic. The home also uses radiant
floor heat, an on-demand hot water
heater, and Energy Star appliances.

blocks west of Orchard Hill church & 2 blocks
south of Orchard Dr. Tour time is 10 a.m. - 12 noon.

Irving Elementary and Lincoln Elementary
Tour Description: Two new Waterloo elementary
schools use geothermal systems for heating and cooling
and energy efficient components. In Irving Elementary
and Lincoln Elementary every room has its own heat pump
and all rooms are computer-controlled to adjust for
occupancy. Autosensors for lighting and energy efficient
doors and windows are other features.
How to Take These Tours: Lincoln Elementary, 302
Cedar Bend, Waterloo, north of Conger Ave. at Cedar Bend
& Parker St. West; Irving Elementary, 1115 W. 5th &
Baltimore St. Waterloo. Tour time for both buildings is
10 a.m. - 12 noon.
