"Near Zero" Home Tour
Date:
Saturday, October 6, 2007, 9 am - 3 pm

Tour 2, Butterfly Energy Works.
For More Information:

info@sagestl.com,

TOUR 2:
Gary Steps at Butterfly Energy Works, 314 918-8418.
Tour Description:
Two tours are available on this day:
TOUR 1: Sage Homebuilders, a green-only builder,
set out to build a Showcase home in an effort to do our part to help
hasten the pace of change. The home combines “hyper-efficient”
construction with self generation of power. What makes it a “Near
Zero” home is that it generates most of the power it needs from the
sun, so it uses “near zero” energy from “the grid”.
The 3,700 sq. ft. house
is a Near-Zero Energy Home (NZEH), meaning that it will produce a
majority of the energy it uses via solar power. The use of renewable
energy, such as solar power is one of many green features to be
showcased; others include ICF construction (Insulated Concrete
Forms) for the walls, geothermal heating and cooling, PEX plumbing,
radiant heat blocking house wrap, and various green construction
techniques. The interior finishes showcase some of the many high
quality and fashionable green options that are now on the market,
including bamboo and cork floors, countertops made from recycled
glass, plumbing fixtures that conserve water, non-off-gassing paint
and adhesives, low-energy use light fixtures, and many others.
TOUR 2:
In addition to your visit to Sage's brand new home, come see how
older houses can be retrofitted to be nearly as efficient as new
designed from scratch energy efficient houses, at Butterfly Energy
Works innovative showcase home.
The house was built in
1946, with brick exterior and plaster lathe walls, originally 1700
ft2. Most windows were single pane double hung. After a major
renovation in the early '90s, it was 2800 ft2, with R38 insulation
in the attic and in the basement ceiling, and new double pane
windows. In 2005 an earth source heatpump was installed, then
2.1Kw/h of solar panels were installed early in 2007, along with a
Gridpoint energy center.
The total HVAC load is
now better than 85% less than in the 1970s, with the total house
energy load down by 80%. The orientation of the house was well
suited to solar PV, as well as passive solar techniques such as
thermal mass, daylighting, and energy efficient landscaping.
