Travis L. Price III, Fellow of AIA

Travis Price, FAIA, will speak on The Mythic Modern: mythology, ecology, and technology…the spirit of place at the Emerging Architecture session of SOLAR 2013 being held at the Baltimore Convention Center. This session takes place on Friday, April 19th from 3:15-4:45 pm and is free and open to the public.

1.5 AIA continuing education learning units will be available for architects and members of AIA who are registered for the conference.  For those not attending the conference, a fee of $45.00 (pre-register as indicated below or pay at the door) will be charged to register for and receive the AIA LUs.

In his three decades as an architect, author, educator, and philosopher Travis Price has developed a modern architecture informed by ecology and mythology that restores the spirit of place to modern design. His work is likened to a fusion of Andy Goldsworthy meeting Joseph Campbell and Frank Gehry

This session explores less the technical “how” or the “what” about passive solar design, but more so the “why”.  Why does solar architecture still drive the hearts and minds of our clientele and the population as a whole when it does so little of the heavy lifting?  Why does the yearning for nature always overwhelm us more than the nuts and bolts, especially for winning commissions?  How is it that the mythical aspect of the sun can command so much allure?  Where else can architects search for such powerfully persuasive poetics?  The heart of the talk is that vanishing cultural poetics is a far greater cry for architects and without understanding the mythical modern aspects missing today, ideas like passive solar will fade into their own sunsets.

The lecture will cover:

• The spirit of geography and the geography of the spirit in modern design.
• The history of cultural form makers and their power on architecture.
• The spirit of place design-build expeditions around the world.
• Modern architectural examples of the embedded green design and cultural mythologies – Walk the Talk.
