Zero Emissions Network

Welcome to the Zero Emissions Network page powered by the American Solar Energy Society and by you, the citizens of Earth. At ZEN, we believe that the only path towards creating a sustainable future for all of the residents of this planet, human and otherwise, is by understanding the effects of our actions and working together to solve problems. We believe that individual citizens, such as yourself, are eager to make a difference in their lives and communities by reducing emissions. But, all too often, we find that we don’t know how to best reduce our emissions, maybe its too expensive, too time consuming, or sometimes we simply don’t know what else we can do. Our goal at ZEN is to provide the knowledge and the resources to each individual (like you) to help you know how you can reduce your emissions. To do this, we follow a four question outline to provide the answers to the following questions:

  • What are carbon emitting activities?
  • What are carbon reducing activities?
  • What are the programs/options available to help you reduce your footprint
  • How does it benefit your life?

Contact Us

We believe that the solutions are out there, many times people just don’t know where to find them. We encourage you to read through the website and learn as much as you can, the more you know the better! We also encourage you send us feedback! Information is always changing and we want to know what you think, how do you like our program? How can we improve? Is our information outdated or incorrect? We like success stories also, how did you use our information to reduce your emissions? Please send your thoughts to ZEN@ASES.org.

How much CO2 does Boulder emit?

In 2018, The City of Boulder emitted 1,513,520 metric tons of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gasses. 54% of Boulders greenhouse gas emissions are from commercial and industrial sources, 17% is from residential sources, 28% is from transportation sources, and the last 1-2% is from other sources like landfills and wastewater. For perspective, New York City emits around 54,349,650 metric tons of CO2 per year, keep in mind that they are about 80 times larger of a city then we are by population. The Environmental Defense fund sponsored this cool (or not so cool) video to visualize just how much CO2 that is.

Who are we?

My name is Zach, everything you are reading on the ZEN page is coming from me but I can’t take credit for the awesome research that is done by the rest of our dedicated and enthusiastic team! I am currently a Junior at CU Boulder working on my Environmental Studies degree and a Philosophy minor. Some of my passions include watching and playing sports and of course trying to help people (like you) reduce their emissions!
Hi, I’m Ellie! I am the Diet & Agriculture intern for ZEN. I’m a senior at CU Boulder studying Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Environmental Studies, and minoring in Global Environmental Affairs. I’m so happy to be a part of ZEN’s efforts to empower each of us to take action, especially when it comes to our food choices. For fun I love to ski, cook, hike, garden and write!
Hey everyone, my name is Michele and I am the outreach coordinator for ZEN! I am a senior at CU Boulder studying Environmental Studies with a minor in Spanish. My passions include playing in the outdoors (I love to ski, climb, camp, and backpack), and advocating for the protection of our natural world. I am super excited to be part of the ZEN team and cannot wait to catalyze positive change in Boulder!
My name is Teli Stathopulos. I am a humanist and an environmentalist. No, these things do not contradict. I am a student at CU pursuing Environmental Studies with minors in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science and Business. I have been apart of ZEN Boulder since phase one. My areas of research include Boulder government, CMAP, municipalization, energy utilities, and energy efficiency. In my free time I like to spend time with loved ones, be outside, and play music.
